Green Flag
Green-Schools’ mission is to protect planet Earth – our shared home to which we all belong – and we want everyone involved! We warmly welcome participants of all backgrounds. Equity, diversity and social justice are fundamental to our values – so whoever you are, we can’t wait to have YOU involved!
In 2008 we began working towards our first Green Flag for the school. In order to qualify for the flag, we had to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the school by trying to reduce, re use, and recycle. We set up a Committee to supervise this work throughout the school. The committee comprised members of the School Staff, Parents and of course the children of the school. The committee, along with all of the children, came up with some excellent ideas to help us get our flag such as composting, shredding paper every day, and putting as much paper waste as possible into our recycling bags. As a result of their efforts we reduced the amount of rubbish we put out dramatically and we were delighted to be awarded our first Green Flag in May 2010.
We then moved on to working for our second Green Flag where the theme was Energy with the entire school community working together to reduce the amount of energy used in the school.
In May 2014 we received our third Green Flag after two years of hard work reducing the amount of water used in the school.
Our fourth Green Flag had Travel as its theme. We encouraged the children and staff to walk, scoot or cycle to school where possible. It was very successful, with fewer cars arriving at the school every morning and evening.
The Fifth Green Flag was for Bio-diversity. We planted fruit and vegetables in our school garden. Beside these plants, we grew wild flowers to attract insects to help with pollination. We hope some of these insects visited our ‘Bug Hotel’ on the school grounds.

In May 2023 we received our sixth Green Flag. The Theme of Global Citizenship Litter and Waste encouraged us to renew our efforts to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle our waste. We picked litter from around the community, including the Ramp Boreen, the GAA pitch and the soccer pitch.

We held our Action Day on the 7th of June 2023. The families of the international pupils brought in some delicious food from their country, as well as some items pertaining to their customs. It was a great occasion for the entire school community to celebrate our Global Citizenship.

On June 19th 2023 Mary Butler TD and Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, raised our sixth Green Flag during a visit to the school.

To obtain our seventh Green Flag our Green Schools programme for saving energy is now in its second year. We are continuing to monitor energy and waste and recycling in the school.
We have installed twenty solar panels to reduce the amount of electricity being used daily. The solar panels are read regularly by the 6th Class pupils who also created projects to highlight the work, energy and great savings of our solar panels.
Signs have been placed in classrooms to remind children to turn off the lights and electronic devices when not in use to conserve energy. As part of our on-going effort to reduce energy in school, children are encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot to school everyday weather permitting.
We held our most recent Global Citizenship Action Day on Friday the 13th of June 2025. Our International families were asked to host a table, with food samples and cultural items from their country. This proved to be a huge success which was celebrated by the whole school community. Below is our current Green code ‘Please, don’t be a fool, save our fuel.’
